I have a client that cannot open some 2007 documents. If he manages to open a Word 2007 document then goes back to the one he could not open before, it then opens.

Is there a setting I need to enable in Internet Explorer 7?

Try this:

1. In Windows Explorer/My Computer, find a file with the extension.doc.
2. Right click on it and select Open With->Choose Program.
3. In the next dialog box that pops up, scroll down and select Word.
4. Click on the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".
5. Click OK.

That should do it.
