some of the messages that I was receiving when attempting to access IE:
Internet Explorer cannot display web pg
I ran a command prompt and received the following message:
default outlk express ml (failed)
modems/network adapters failed
wan miniport (tp) failed
default ip gateway (failed)
dns srvr search order (failed)
ip address (failed)
pantech usb modem wwan drvr (failed)

I have an internet connection, just can't get to it.  I upgraded the ram about 2 months ago to 2gb.  Laptop ran fine after, but I am wondering if this could be causing the issues.  Also, now when I first start my laptop, the settings change to 8-bit and I have to go to properties to change to 32-bit.  Can anyone please help a not so tech-savvy laptop owner???

Sounds like there are some driver issue going on. In regrárds to the last thing you mentioned with the resolution setting changing.  This coudl coincide with there not being a LAN or NIC allowing internet access. Go to Dell,s website and do a search based on your service tag and update ALL your driver starting with the Bios and chipset. Or contact Dell to get guidance on using the diagnostice partition. Just to make sure that your MoBo is not failing.

Are you connected to the internet? Some times IE works wierd if it does not have an internet connection.

Another thing to think about is what version of IE do you have. I had an issue with IE 6. I couldn't find the exact issue but updated to IE 7 and everything worked fine. The good news is that you can just uninstall IE 7 or 8 if it annoys you.

Hello r14roz,

1. In your IE options menu, under connection tab, make sure proxy is NOT selected.

2. If you are using AVG antivirus program, go here
http://www.avg.com/faq.num-1561#faq_1561

2a. Check if firewall, antivirus, or another security program is blocking the websites. Temporarily disable the programs one at a time and test,

3. Run this script to fix your connection. The script reinstall winsock, TCP/IP stack, and HOSTS file.
http://downloads.subratam.org/WinsockFix.zip

Hope this helps!

Hello and thanks to all that posted comments to assist me.  I removed or disabled the security programs.  I turned off the firewall system.  I am still receiving the following message when trying to access the internet:  "internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".  I used command prompt to ping the dns.  I started some action after removing AVG anti-virus prog and disabling McAfee security program, but I cannot remove the McAfee progs from the computer.  I get a message that says "could not open INSTALL.LOG file".  Still can't access the internet.  I have IE 7.  Any other help out there??  Thanks

Hi war1, I tried typing the site that you suggested into the browser and anything that I type in the browser shoots back "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".  Can you offer further assistance?

Thanks,

Reinstall the same McAfee in the same directory.  Then uninstall it.  The missing log file means you deleted the removal log file.

war1mcafee was installed in the c drive, i don't have a disc to re-install it.  so where does that leave me? When I run network diagnostics for windows xp, i receive a message that says that "Windows has detected a problem with the winsock provider catalog on the computer.  The catalog allows programs to communicate with this coputer across thenetwork".
