Build New VM Machine - Restore As New Host OS with Ghost?

Hi All,
Just wondering if it is possible to:

1) Build a new VM machine i.e. Windows 2008 Server
2) Install new hard disk into my PC
3) Restore the VM Disk with Ghost onto the new hard drive
4) Use the new hard disk as the bootable O/S.

* Using VMWare Workstation v6.5.1 Build 126130.

Basically I want to move my desktop O/S from XP to Windows 2008 Server x64. I do not want to trash my PC (XP) until I have built / tested the Windows 2008 Server with all my application, etc.

For example my PC has SAS controller / drives. VMWare does not install the drivers for the VM machine?

Or do I test it in a VM environment and then rebuild it the "long way" using a new hard disk?

Many thanks for your help.
Ian.

What you could do is P2V your computer into a new VM using VMWare Converter (https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=converter)
VMware Converter is free. Of course you will need to do this on another PC since it your PC that is being virtualized. Once that it done, you can try to upgrade your VM PC but I am sure that XP cannot be upgraded to Windows 2008 ... so you are proabably just better off building a new VM, installing the 2K8 OS and all your applications to see if there are compatbility issues.

Hope this helps

Hi za mkh:

Thanks for your response. I think you may have misunderstood what I am trying to do?
I do not want to upgrade XP to Windows 2008.

1) I want to build a new VM Win 2008 Server (which already have) hosted on XP.
2) Install / test all the applications onto the VM Win 2008 Server within the VM environment. This allows me to continue to work as normal and in parallel build the new desktop OS.
3) Convert the VM Win 2008 Server, via Ghost, onto a new hard disk.
4) Boot from the new hard disk to test. If the this worked then my PC would now be a Win 2008 Server.

The question is does a converted VM machine (disk)

Make sense?
Cheers
Ian.

Oopps.. forgot to finish the last sentence.

"The question is does a converted VM machine (disk) translate to being an "actual" machine when ghost restores from it"
Your help has saved me hundreds of hours of internet surfing.
