Vista Boot Problem

I have a brand new out of the box dell studio xps. I have freshly installed vista business sp 1 64bit edition. Everytime i reboot, or power on i goes past the dell post screen to a blank black screen wth a blinking cursor in the left hand corner. If i hit control - alt -del it reboots then boots into the os normally. What can cause this?

Do you have a USB drive plugged in? It may be checking for an OS on that drive.

no usbs are connected, just power and network cable, i will check the boot settings, any other reason why this might happen?

How long have you waited for the pc to boot into Windows?  My  two-year-old Dell XPS 410 Desktop now pauses for a long while with a black screen, part of the time without a cursor and part of the time with one as it boots up.  It might take the pc a couple of minutes to get past that screen and finally into the bootup spash screen, and then afterwards into the Desktop screen.  It didn't used to do this;  I think one of Microsoft's never-ending Windows updates must have caused this...

I usually control alt delete it before it finishes. I will try to let it run its course. Its a fresh installed, i just bought the computer two days ago.

no go, i let it sit for five minutes and nothing, anything longer than that is a problem. Any other suggestions?

Try resetting your BIOS to the defaults. Also when it's stuck in the black screen do you notice the hard drive light flashing at all?

in the bios, check for the quick boot option and disable it.
then test.
if it boots ok now, it is your OS disk that does not run up to speed fast enough - you can ask for a replacement.

I couldnt find a fix, but the reinstall and reformat of the harddrive removed the problem. Thanks
