Outlook Webmail randomly stops functioning internally and externally. Connection Interrupted
Exchange Server 2003 on Server 2003 Enterprise
Our webmail service seems to randomly stop from time to time. There is nothing in the event viewer to indicate as to why (that I have noticed), and the server that is hosting the webmail is functioning perfectly. Exchange is also working fine with local Outlook clients. I have checked the routine services which may have stopped functioning, and I even reset those which applied to OWA. I have no clue as to what causes this problem.
The only way I have found to fix this issue is to completely reboot the server. If not once, then twice.
A few odd things I have noted:
1. Symantec Endpoint was uninstalled from this computer, but the Application Pool still has some Symantec residue. (I'll post the specific applications that are linking to Symantec. I am away from the server at the moment). I believe that one of the folders containing the Symantec application was in C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Inetpub\Reporting I'll have to get the exact directory later. Anyways, the symantec has been uninstalled, and it has no active services running, yet it seems active in my Webmail in IIS
2. Sometimes I get "connection interrupted" and other times I get a "cannot display webpage" error message when the webmail goes down

You know, we had a server that had Symantec Endpoint installed and uninstalled on it as well, and it got completely screwed up. We had a problem where shared drives would just stop working, and then IIS would stop responding. This all started after we uninstalled Endpoint. We ended up just reloading the machine, but I'm sure it is something to do with endpoint residue. I did notice before it was reloaded that it still had Symantec Networking services running, even after everything was uninstalled.

The share issue! That happened to me too. My NETBOOT was virtually worthless after I ripped Symantec.
My question then is, is it safe to delete the application pool items from OWA if they're not even used, or will they cry, "Jenga"?

Do you mean the items listed under the application pool as running items? If so, removing those will just stop their current instance, which means they are running somehow. If you mean deleting an entire application pool, yes you can delete those if you are sure they aren't being used.
Well, they're actually under the webmail.mywebsite.com tree in IIS.
However, if you go to the application pool, it does not refer to Symantec, it actually refers to "Reporting" for instance.
I'm very green with Exchange and Webmail, FYI.

Oh you mean under the website tree, like this? If so yes you can delete that, since endpoint was uninstalled, I don't know that it will do any good other than freeing up a little space though.
I'll try that, but do you know a way that I could somehow "kickstart" my webmail without my ridiculous rebooting requirement? This webmail is ran on a DC....
You might try restarting the "Server" service, that may get things going again. I was in the same boat, we just kept restarting the server. As a warning, don't install the full version of EndPoint on anything ever again, lol.

Can i reinstall OWA without impacting Exchange? I know that may sound a bit juvenile, but it's also a thought that crossed my mind.

Yes you can uninstall and re-install OWA without affecting Exchange at all, but I don't know if that will help, since you are having the same shared drive problem that I was having. Did you check the services on the server to see if "Symantec Network Access Control" is still there?
