Do you hear strage noises coming from this hard drive? Clicks, spinning noises? If you hear them, it means that it's going to fail really shortly.<br />

Otherwise, it could be that the installation process recognized it as pata during install (hda) but used it as sata (sda) from first boot. But in this way it changed the references to the hd and so the system is no longer able to find what it wrote down in config files during the install, understand?<br />

the key to solve the problem is to restore the references to the proper hard disk name in the config files; these are in /etc/fstab file, which lists the devices to automount on startup, and in /boot/grub/menu.lst, which is the file that lets you boot to the proper partition.<br />

I cannot help with editing files :) Do as ai_ja_nai wrote - edit this /etc/fstab (after chrooting as written in above comments). When you do this changes, reboot your system (boot from your harddisk - with CD removed).

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 and when rebooted this message came up:

Nothing happens afterwards. Just the underscore blinking....
