Questions about RAM for DL360 G4P & Also Virt

Hi Experts,

I have some RAM that I purshased not too long ago with the intent on using it in a certain server.  That server went bye-bye and I would now like to install the RAM in another server, which is an HP Proliant G4P.

I am a RAM goober, so I am asking for your help!

The RAM that I would like to use is DDR2-800 PC6400.  Will this work?  Also, the RAM itself has a little chip in the middle of the stick.  This means ECC, right?

Also, this particular server comes with a XEON 2.8Ghz proc.  Does anyone know if this processor (or this server in general) supports Intel VT?

Thank you so much!

The proliant, which should be a DL360 g4p, requires Registered ECC DDR2 memory.  The "little chip in the middle" isn't enough for me to make a determination.  If you can give me the part number off the memory or the model of the server they were intended for, I can be more specific.   The XEON 5000 series, which the 2.8ghz is one of, does support VT, as long as the system board can handle it.

Thanks DM!

Okay, so here is the memory, and it says that it is not ecc:

So I guess im out of luck, right?

Also, as far as the processor, since it is 2.8Ghz version of this server does that mean it is a 5000 series?

How do I know if the board supports VT?  Is it a "revision" issue?

Thanks!

I did a quick search on VT for the Proliant dl360 g4p, and it does support VT.  As for the memory, yes, you are out of luck there!

as long as it's a xeon, your fine.  I don't think that proliant has any non VT options.

You can turn VT off and on in the BIOS, you probably have to turn non-execute memory protection on as well.

It is not true.
DL360 G4P does not suppot VT and therefore couldn't run 64bit OS.

"Although a processor is 64bit it may not support 64bit guest OS when running virtualization. If it is VMWare you are trying to use you can only install 64bit guest OS if the installed processors support Intel VT technology. I've run VMWare ESXi 3.5, 4.0 and now 4.1 on my DL360 G4 but it only supports 32bit guest OS.

I am looking to purchase an inexpensive used DL series server that supports the Intel VT technology but having trouble finding one that is less than $1000.

Intel has a great page that shows all their Xeon processors with detailed specs like if it supports VT. I found this to be very helpful.

In the Xeon family pretty much if it is a dual or higher core processor is supports VT. From the list I can see only 1 dual core that does not have VT. That is the 2.8GHz with 4MB cache and 800FSB. Most unfortunate, I think that is the same dual core processor in the DL360 G4p server which I was hoping to purchase and run 64bit guest OS on for myself.

All the specs you want to know about the DL360 G4p are at:
