Detection of product feature 'Core_Common' failed during request for component

I'm having an issue where every few minutes my screen flashes a window up that looks as though something is trying to install. It goes away so quickly that I can't tell what it is. My application log is flooded with the floowing error:

Detection of product '{EF7E931D-DC84-471B-8DB6-A83358095474}', feature 'Core_Common' failed during request for component

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running on an IBM Thinkpad - Windows XP. Thank you.

Hi,
Have a look at this:

Click on start>run
type in msconfig and hit enter
click on "Startup"

Look for an entry that points to "EA Downloader"  (not sure of the exact name)

remove the checkmark from the entry and hit apply/ok
reboot and test
Your help has saved me hundreds of hours of internet surfing.

There was something called CORE that refered to something from EA, but this has already been disabled. I've also uninstalled the EA downloader. I also uninstalled my all-in-one. It is still flashing on the screen and writing to the event log almost every minute.
MightySW

what else is in MSCONFIG?
flubbster

Then go ahead and disable everything in startup under msconfig. See if it stops. If it does, begin by enabling half at a time, until you zero in on the culprit. If you disable all and it still happens, pls let us know and we will go from there.

I am glad that I am not the only one that suggests the logarithmic approach to MSConfig
flubbster

lol..

OK, I  can try that. Also, here is everything in the users MSCONFIG:

What about the HKLM run key?

Personally I would ditch the following:

I can't get complete access to his PC. Could I just connect in to his registry and wack these keys?

Yes, you can do that too.

I recommend that you export a backup of this key before deleting them.

Also, You mentioned that this is HKU\system\microsoft\windows\cv\run

is this true?

Did you look at: HKLM\....same thing.... ?
StarfishTech

ASKER
Actually, this is HKLM, not HKU
MightySW

Ok, check HKU too.

OK, Slowly I've been eliminating things from the startup within MSCONFIG. The problem still exists - also now when the user starts up, he gets an annoying message - "You have used the system configuration utilty to make changes to the way windows starts." I checked the "Don't show this message or launch the system config utility when windows starts" but it still pops up. Can I get rid of this somehow? Also, you said to delete things out of the HKU as well - is there a way to do this through the MSCONFIG?
flubbster

Personally, I would not delete anything. Rather, I would just disable them if they show up under "Startup" in MSCONFIG.

Yes, it is annoying about the startup. It is a quirk on some systems. On most, once you check the box to not show it again, it goes away. Download this little script to stop it:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_nomsconfig.vbs

save it to your desktop and run it.
MightySW

I would think that backing up the registry key before you start to delete is satisfactory.

However, due to the amount of items you have in your RUN key, you should perform the following from MSconfig, pinpoint the problem, and then delete what is causing the problem from the registry.

Sorry if I was unclear about this.

Thanks Flubbster!

Well, I've officially disabled everything in the startup of msconfig and believe it or not, I'm still getting this stupid MSINSTALLER error in the apps log - also I'm still seeing it flash on my screen briefly.Any other ideas?
MightySW

Can you post the log?

look in the services and see if there is an EA service listed.

click on start>run and type in:
services.msc

If you find the service, double-click on it and change the startup type to disable.
reboot and test.

Also, you can open up regedit and do a search for C:\program files\electronic arts\EADM

And delete all relevant instances of it.
StarfishTech

ASKER
I went into the registry and deleted all keys that referenced electronic arts. I also ran the MS cleanup utility. The MS cleanup utility did not report EA being on the system. Also there is no EA service running on the system. After all this, the errors continue to pop up in the app log. We are starting to lean towards restoring the system to a previous date. We are out of ideas.

Do you still have the game or application that was installed?

If so you can reinstall it and then deinstall it.
