Windows update keeps offering same update
I keep getting the same update KB967715 being offered, even after I install it. I have Windows XP service pack3.
I have tried all the remedies offered by the  Microsoft Support KB/910339, but still have the problem.
I have a feeling my registry has been altered in some way so as to not recognise that the update has been installed
It is more of an inconvenience, as it seems that the installation has occurred, but the system does not acknowledge it.
Any suggestions?

Two options:

uninstall the update, then allow it to install again. That most likely will take care of it.

Other option is as follows:

You go to the Windows Update site, View List of Updates, find the update in question, right-click it, and select *Hide*. The update will not be attempted again for that particular one again.

Are you running through automatic updates or the windows update website?  Go to www.windowsupdate.com > upgrade to microsoft update if still on windows update > choose custom when asked > scan your system  to see the available updates and install all priority and optional updates > at the end, it should tell you which ones were completed and which ones failed.

If all the updates failed, you will need to re-register the .dll files associated with windows updates.  Save the following code to a text file and name it regsvr32.bat then double-click on the file and allow it to run:

c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 wuapi.dll /s
c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s
c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll /s
c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 wucltui.dll /s
c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 wups.dll /s
c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 wups2.dll /s
c:\windows\system32\regsvr32 wuweb.dll /s

If that still doesn't work, you may need to dump the update files from your machine.  Turn off auto updates or disable the service > delete the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder and empty the recycle bin.  Run Microsoft updates again.  Once finished, you should be able to turn autoupdates back on.

Let us know if this doesn't solve the problem,

Flubbster: As mentioned have done all the recommended solutions offered by Microsoft. By "Hiding" that particular file I guess will stop it showing, but that is treating the symptom rather than the cause.

LarrySMcFarlin:

I'm running through automatic updates, but I get the same results from the web site. All other updates are updated and do not appear again except the KB967715 one. It shows as installed with a green tick when I install it from the web.

Before I dump all my updates, I think that the problem must be in the registry. Why not recognise only that one file, but yet all the others are recognised as installed?

As mentioned before, if I  delete the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution folder, how will I regain all that info stored in that folder as it is a massive folder with a lot of info on it?

I have the same problem with two Win XP PCs (SP3)

My research has shown that this is apparently a MS problem with this update? It is something to do with any seucrity software installed not allowing it to make registry changes.

A good link is here:

http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=38665&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I ran the KB950582 on one my my PCs and am waiting to see if the update re-appears.  Do a restart afterwards.

To stop it annoying you for now you can hide it:

Windows XP
To hide an update, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click either Windows Update or Microsoft
Update.
2. Click Custom.
3. Click to clear the check box that is next to the update that you want to hide.
4. Expand the update that you want to hide, and then click the "Don't show this update
again" check box.
5. Click Review and install updates.

GERLIS:

I have seen that link you mentioned above before, but have not run it yet as I have a later version of the Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00. I'm worried that it may upset my other settings. I suppose I could do a back-up of my registry and see what happens.

Do you foresee any problems changing the version to a lower one?

I simply tried the update KB950582 menioned at the end of that link/post and it seems to have cured the problem.

Do a reg b/u and set a sytem restore point then try it.

Will try it without changing the registry as mentioned in the link and report back. Thanks

Gerlis:
Seems to have done the trick. However, I'm sure my automatic updates are not working because when I go to the Windows update site, I get new updates there, but not via auto updates with the yellow shield in the system tray.
Did you find the same thing?
Reply to this and I will award you the points. So far I have not had any new requests to download KB967715
Thanks

Haven't tried Dial-a-Fix yet. Seems very old version, pre-service pack3. Thanks a lot for the help. All seems O.K. except for the automatic update not giving me notice of new updates. If I'm brave enough, I will download Dial-a-Fix and give it a try. Regards. Sandy

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
