USB Keyboard and Mouse connected to dock stop working after windows loads.

I have a user that uses a Dell D630 laptop connected to a docking station with a USB keyboard and USB mouse at his desk.  Two days ago the USB keyboard and mouse started acting up.  When the machine posts I can access BIOS fine, the user can enter his PGP password fine but when windows loads the mouse and keyboard stop functioning.  The mouse light and num lock lights turn off and will not work no matter what USB port on the dock they are plugged into.  Device Manager does not see them.  They work fine when plugged directly into the laptop.  They also work normally through the dock when the PC is booted into Safe Mode.

I have tried a new dock, new peripherals, new chipset driver.  The only minor success I had was removing all the USB controllers and rebooting the laptop.  The keybaord and mouse worked one time in normal mode.  After a reboot the problem started all over again.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Delete the docked hardware profile and recreate it.

Go to the "system" icon in the Control Panel.
Then Hardware tab
Then click on the Hardware Profiles button.

fyi, you have to be undocked to remmoved the docked profile.
Sounds very much like windows installation is messed up, down to basic drivers. You may want to scan your system for viruses and malware of any kind, perhaps run a SFC.

Thanks for the replies.  I had a long weekend and couldn't reply and my user is out of the office.  I checked the profiles and there were about 13 of them.  I deleted them all and tried to create a new docked profile but every time the laptop is docked and un-docked it creates a new one.  I also tried to restore the system back a couple days before the problem started but the restore fails.  I think there is a bigger issue with the OS.  I found a couple postings that sound like the same problem with some Dell laptops but they had a fingerprint reader and a Windows update broke the driver.  When I have access to the laptop again I'm going to try that but its looking like a re-image at this point.
We had another laptop with this issue last week.  I still haven't found a link since the users are in different departments and use different XP images but I'm keeping at this one.
We found another D630 with this issue today.  The user had found a work around before he complained about the problem.  If the laptop is un-docked using start - un-dock, then re-docked the USB ports on the dock start working again.  We think we have found a common element to all the users with the problem.  They are all in our international sales department that uses USB Logitech webcams.  We are starting to suspect an issue with the driver or device.
