Random characters are fine, but the ability to specify a few (maybe 5?) ports would be nice. Also, random message lengths, up to say MTU?

Well... I'm not aware of any tool, which can change MTU per connection. As far as I know this is set system-wide. 
 
Below script can 'flood' just one port at a time (you can of course run few instances of this script - each with other port). 
 
I assume, that you have netcat installed. Its binary is sometimes called nc, and sometimes netcat. Find out which one you have, and change NETCAT variable (in below script) accordingly. 
 
Syntax: ./script.sh hostname port

That looks good! I didn't mean to say change the MTU size, I meant random packets from very small UP TO mtu. :) 
I will give it a try right now! (I SUCK at bash scripting. I am glad other people are good at it!)

I am looking for someone to create a quick script that would create traffic against a host. I would like to be able to specify some ports, and have it fire off packets with a modest payload. I am looking to see how our in house software handles network latency, and that is what I am trying to create. I don't really care what language the script is built in. Thanks!

Linux Script to create network traffic against specific host

The term 'shell' refers to a general class of text-based command interpreters most often associated with the UNIX and Linux operating systems.
