Questions about graphic programming formats!

I am bout to start on the venture of 3D programming and have noticed the limited area of expertise on converting to .x files from Maya 2009(.ma, .mb, .obj, etc...) and even on there site. I have read that when you make a published game that it is unlikely to use .x files. Can anyone tell me why that is and how would I go about loading a different file type using C++ and DirectX?
