FrameMaker 9.0 opens files as view only from Sharepoint

I am using FrameMaker 9.0 to connect to 2007 MOSS. FrameMaker connects to IIS using basic authentication via FrameMaker's workgroup server option. I can browse the server and open files but they will only open as view only.

When I try to checkout the file, a dialog box opens that says "Server Returned Error: Permission Denied".

The IIS server log shows status errors - 401 2 2148074254.

Any ideas?

By default Sharepoint uses Windows Authentication so FrameMaker will not be able to connect.  Basic authentication sends unencrypted user names and passwords anyway which is dangerous in today's age.

We are testing this on our development side. When it goes to production, we will be using https to secure the authentication. Also, I have been able to connect via FrameMaker and open files. The problem is that FrameMaker is not locking the file for editing when it opens. I'm thinking there is a permission problem when authenticating via headers to Sharepoint from an extranet as Sharepoint is mainly setup to be an intranet server product.

This has nothing to do with HTTPS.  Sharepoint will not accept basic authentication.  You are correct, this is a permissions problem because the two systems are using different authentication protocols.
Your help has saved me hundreds of hours of internet surfing.

I mentioned HTTPS because you made a comment to basic authentication's security risks.

In Sharepoint's/MOSS 2007 central admin, you can select basic authentication as an authentication type and I have set it to accept basic authentication. Also, in IIS 6 directory security, I have basic authentication selected as an authentication type. I have authenticated with Sharepoint using FrameMaker and can browse Sharepoint's entire directory and open files. My problem is that all of the files open read only from Sharepoint and I get "permission denied" when trying to checkout/lock the file for editing.

I can't assume that you understand the implications of any configuration settings, that's why I mentioned the issue with Basic Authentication.

I should have typed my last comment a little differently.  "Basic Authentication" can be activated but I've seen issues with it.  It's a work around for some problems with the Page Viewer Web Part.  However, it seems to have some conflicts with workflows which might be the problem here.

Can you check the document library settings?  If it requires check out for editing FrameMaker likely can't trigger that process.  You might have to simply remove the option to 'Require Checkout'

Removing the require checkout option did not help.
