Permissions on new file server
II just set up a new file server. I copied all of the files from the old server and put them on the new one. I have looked at the security settings on both servers, and they mimic each other. However, when a user tries to write or create a folder, they get the message access denied. They are able to see all of their files, but cannot write to the folders. Please help.
What are the share permissions and NTFS security permissions to these users or groups?

Its a Server 2008 Standard Edition. Now I'm having trouble writing to the shares. Lets just use a folder as an example. Everyone has full control. But when I try to create a folder I get access denied.
About which permissions are you talking? Are these share permissions or security permissions?
"Everyone" can have full control on the NTFS security, but still have Read Only on the share. Most restrictive applies, therefore the share level rights would take precedence.

Yes true. Dear Wincit, can you please check both the permissions and let us update here asap?
ASKER
ok. I think you all are on to something. At the share level I have System, Admnistrators, Creator/Owner, and Users.
Ok. But do these users or groups exist there?
ASKER
I'm not sure what you mean. I have set the permissions on the share to match the old server. Again, everyone is listed and has full control. I still get access denied.

Sorry, cross-posting. It was important to clarify because the two lists act independently.
So, you have:
<Share Security> -- Everyone: FullControl
<NTFS Security> -- <User>: At least modify
If you look at the Advanced properties for the security (NTFS), does that permission apply to "This folder, subfolders and files" or something else?

Excellent. I know that this was probably basic admin knowledge, but I did not have this problem when I went from a 2003 to 2003 Server. This time I went from 2000, to 2008. The problem was in the advanced settings for the share, Everyone was not there. I added it, and selected full control. Problem solved. So, NTFS permissions are just for the files and folders in the share itself? The share permissions take precedence over th
Share permissions? Default is read only for 2003.
Otherwise it will need a bit of a deeper look at the permissions which have been assigned.
