Assuming you still have another DC/DNS for this domain, do NOT change the zone type.<br />
Just demote the machine, the AD integrated zones will disappear from DNS. <br />
Then re-create the zones as *secondary* zones in the DNS, and pull the DNS from the existing DC/DNS; you'll have to allow zone transfers for the demoted server in the properties of the DC/DNS server holding the primary zone.

The above experts suggestion should work. Just that if your demoted DC will still be in the same network as a member of the existing domain and you still want to have a centralized DNS where you get updates and replicates to all DNZ, you may want to make your demoted DC with a secondary zone.

got it, i was just trying to clarify as the first two posts had a bit of discrepency of primary and secondary. I'm sure Chris meant secondary, but it can be primary if DNS will not be used by as Active Directory integrated zone or the DNS server will be separate from AD onto a different server etc. Guess not enough info to confirm that....

I meant Primary. Based on the assumption that the asker didn't want to host the zone in AD any longer. Hence the warnings at the bottom.<br />

oBdA's is perfect to the other circumstance, where an AD server will be the Primary and this demoted server acting as Secondary.<br />
