asked on

wake up a sleeping XP system over the network

Hello, i have a XP machine in the cellar acting as a media center via my WII console. Trouble i have is i didn't set the power options and so the system has gone to sleep. Is there anyway i can issue a wakeup command? Otherwise I'll have to take a keyboard, mouse and monitor down to the pc as I just have the base unit down there.
Thanks

Download this: http://www.4shared.com/file/64290961/d8ec004/WolCmd.html
Extract the .EXE to the C Drive.

Open up Command Prompt, and type this in:
C:\wolcmd MACADDRESS 255.255.255.255 255.255.255.255

To find a computer's MACADDRESS, ping the machine from your computer by its IP ADDRESS.
The type in: arp -a to get the list of your ARP table, in there you should find the MAC address associated with that machine.

I'm not getting a response from the ping although i know it's on the network as i can see the registered mac address on the router access list.

Does it have the Windows Firewall up? If you cannot communicate with the machine by pinging it via Host Name or IP address, I'm not sure how you can send it a Wake-On-LAN packet. You can try seeing if you can communicate with it from the router, if your router has PING Diagnostic tools.

the firewall is up but is that the problem if the system has gone to sleep?

To wake a computer up from sleep over network, requires some configuration for your server. You need to configure it  on your sleeping computer to work properly.

If you do ARP -a in command prompt do you see this machine in your ARP table?
To wake up a machine from sleep, you will need to find out its MAC Address. Disregard my previous question, about whether or not the Firewall is up. Its obvious that you won't be able to ping a machine that is asleep.

Ok, if you're trying to wake up the pc, why not just disable the  sleep mode?  Also get a UPS so it stays up during power flickers.  You can also look in the bios of you pc, you may be able to auto restart the computer if it looses power.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
