Programmatically access different versions of Interop.Excel

Is there any way I can code access to an excel sheet independant of which version of office installed?
I'm aiming for at least version 11 (2003) and 12 (2007)
I added the version 12 interop, but could not run it on 11.

or alternatively, is there a way of maintaining connectivity to both versions?
