Alternatively, maybe humble rsync in a few scripts might suffice? Although with 1tb...you're still limited by your wan link.<br />

Well 1tb will not do it for you if you have 1tb of data. If you can scrape up a few hundred dollars you can pickup a couple of the new 1tb drives. <br />

Then stretch them out by taking one full backup and then incremental. <br />
<br />
If you want free then also consider good old xcopy. <br />
/s and /a options will copy files in subdirectories and only those with the archive bit set. See this for full details. <br />

My company does not have enough money to upgrade our distodisk Unitrends backup unit. Basically it is running slower and not as reliable as I would like, also the support has run out, so no answers if something were to happen! It currently is backing up all of our servers for a month, up to 1 Tb of information. &nbsp;I managed to salvage a 1Tb NAS server and installed it to one of our remote locations (seperated by a dedicated T1). I would like to perform some more solid backups utilizing this NAS. What are my options? The company has no budget, so this will need to be done as free as possible. &nbsp;Copying files over taked forever, I need something more robust!

Backup Solutions

Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media used to retain digital data. In addition to local storage devices like CD and DVD readers, hard drives and flash drives, solid state drives can hold enormous amounts of data in a very small device. Cloud services and other new forms of remote storage also add to the capacity of devices and their ability to access more data without building additional data storage into a device.

Storage

The term "Backup" means the methods and processes involved to copy computer data (system data as well as application data) to media other than the ones where the data originally live (disk, tape, optical, cloud). "Restore" in turn means the methods and processes involved in data recovery, i. e., bringing back copied computer data to their original location. Backup/Restore primarily serves as a means of protection against data loss, be it due to disaster, corruption or sabotage. It can also be used for recovering data from an earlier point in time and even for cloning machines or applications. There is a wide variety of backup/restore software available, from expensive commercial products to free or open source tools.

Storage Software

Servers are computing devices that are similar to desktop computers in that they have the same basic components, but are significantly different in size, configuration and purpose. Servers are usually accessed over a network, and many run unattended, without a computer monitor, input device, audio hardware or USB interfaces. Many servers do not have a graphical user interface (GUI), and are configured and managed remotely. Servers typically include hardware redundancy such as dual power supplies, RAID disk systems, and ECC memory, along with extensive pre-boot memory testing and verification. Critical components might be hot swappable, and to guard against overheating, servers might have more powerful fans or use water cooling.
