Separate email and web hosting advice

Not to sure what the logical move is here, but here is the scenario.

The client has an existing website and mail hosted at a company. We have developed a new site and want to host just the site only. The client has 40 employees with their mail clients configured to point to thewebsite.com and not mail.thewebsite.com

The hosting company wants to keep all DNS on their server and just point the website (A record im assuming?) to our server. But if they do that then all mail will stop working they say.

What is the most logical and easy approach do solving this without having a redirect to a subdomain or without having to have all their employees reconfigure their mail clients.

Im guessing there isnt an easy approach and all employees computers need to be reconfigured..

Thanks in advance..

Yes this is what we have done, and thats what i was afraid our only easy solution was. The downside of this method, that i can see is related to SEO and what not.. Thanks for the help wasnt sure if i was overlooking a possible solution.
