HP Notebook cannot boot

HP Pavilion dv5000
NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+alt+Del to restart
Diagnistics in BIOS ran Primary Hard Disk Self Test failed with error code "#2-07 Fail"
Is it really a Hard Drive failed?  The system is out of warranty...
Thanks in advance for help.

Yes, that code and diagnostic failed are your laptop hard drive failed. Time to buy new one.

So then how does it know know that NTLDR is missing?  Is it like not completely dead?   Is there a way to repair it?

If you dont trust HP diagnostic result, you should pull the drive out and check hard drive vendor. The link below listed many tools that can test the drive:
http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/HDDProblems.htm
Or you can hook the drive on other system and access it see if you can copy data off and do some test.

Boot using the Windows XP installation disk, press R. Then type the following commands:
note : you can test after each command

      FIXMBR
      FIXBOOT
      BOOTCFG /rebuild
      cd\
      copy E:\i386\NTLDR
      ATTRIB -arsh ntldr
      copy e:\i386\NTDETECT.COM
      ATTRIB -arsh ntdetect.com

E: should be the location of your CDRom where you have the Windows install disk located.
and check if those files are in the root :   NTLDR   boot.ini     ntdetect.com

Contents of the boot.ini file :
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

check this too for more info :  http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm#What_if_none_of_the_options_worked?

and for testing the disk - pick the one for your brand :
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
if this shows a problem - replace it

The thing is it doesn't see the drive during the XP install.  However, when boots shows NTLDR is missing.  Tried to boot with ERD same thing - doesn't see the local disk.

This is why I am a bit confused how come it knows that NTLDR is missing when boots but doesn't find the disk during the install.

Weird.

OK.. Now the problem is to find a driver for this SATA drive.  HP provides a utility exe that creates floppy with a driver.  No internal/external floppy drive available.
Seagate doesn't have such a driver.. ST9120821AS.   Sucks!
PUNKY

No, you wont need driver for hard drive, you need drivers for sata controller of your motherboard. You dont have floppy, then you will have to slipstream XP and add sata controller driver using nLite.

Oh never mind.  I just disabled the SATA support in BIOS and now it sees the drive and going through the install.
