Problems Running 64-bit Virtual Machine in OLD SERVER

Hi Guys,

I am running VMWARE ESX SERVER on this old server. The Intel Board is SE7520BD2 and running 2 x Xeon 3.0 Ghz processors with HyperThreading enabled. When I try to load a 64-bit Virtual Machine, I get an error saying that my hardware doesn't support it.
I came across a few posts that say INTEL VT must be enabled in the BIOS to allow virtualization of 64-bit OS but I did not see any such option. Incidentally I came across this post http://communities.intel.com/message/10527;jsessionid=148CC1C82E73C1AD62918F5FE1982A52 and it says my board doesn't support VT. Can one of the experts confirm this. Also if this is true, can you suggest an alternate way to load a 64-bit OS using the same hardware.

Lars,

Can you look at the above server board model and confirm what you just said
Darius Ghassem

Yes,  your board does support 64-bit technology. What processor do you have in the board? Look through te BIOS for Virtual support.
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.

That board should indeed support EM64T enabled processors (that can run 64 bit OSes). Whether you can run 64 bit guests in VMware depends on your cpu model and if your BIOS supports VT. Your motherboard chipset is indeed listed in this document, but it is possible that the BIOS you're currently using doesn't support it. Do you know what cpu model you are using?

Hi

Try to run the VMware 64bit tool, and check the compatible of your system.

Guys I am trying to update my BIOS to see that if it has the VT option in the new version. Please refer to my other POST and reply if you think you know how to go about doing the update using a flash drive

To Bestway,

I had already run this tool before but I have now run it once again for you (this time on a VM). The output is in the figure below -

Hi

Yes i think you need to have to change some of your hardware.

So you mean get some new processors?? If I do that will it mean I would need to install my ESX?

Bestway is correct if your current install is 32bit you can run 32bit virtual machine but it will not run 64bit without your reinstalling esx 64bit

Final question guys -

So all of you have confirmed what I presumed but still once more I ask - Is there any way for me to run a 64-bit OS on this existing server using the same hardware, CPU etc. Is there a tweak that would allow me to do it. If Not, I will assign you all points and close the question

Just confirming that BIOS update, did not enable the VT mode in the BIOS so I am guessing you guys are right. My only option is to install VMWARE 64-bit or upgrade my hardware. Correct me if I am wrong?

It wont help to "install VMware 64 bit". ESX only exists in one version, not as seperate 32 and 64 bit versions. You can only run 64 bit guests if your hw (and bios) is supported.
