Yeah but that one keeps asking you to upgrade and in the end it stopped working on me so dumped it before switching to AVAST. Now that is going paid only.

My preference always was AVG since it cleaned nicely even the deeply-embedded trojans. However, since my hard drives' capacity has increased dramatically, I found that:
1) AVG occupies close to 100% of CPU cycles and slows down the PC dramatically
2) and with increased size of HD, it takes close to 22 hrs to scan each PC.
Needless to say, it makes PC unusable or perhaps not-very responsive.
Just 2 days ago I have installed a new product called VIPRE. It's not free but I'll explain you why you want to pay. First of all, their claim that CPU is not 100% occupied during a scan is true. Secondly, since I always admired AVG's capabilities to discover viruses and trojans, I was amazed that VIPRE discovered 12 trojans that were never detected by AVG.
Folks, if you don't know what is hidden on your hard drive and hope that your free anti-virus software is good enough, you are wrong. I have 15 days evaluation of VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware (can be downloaded from http://www.vipreantivirus.com (Sunbelt Software). I am seriously considering to spend $29.95 to protect my PC. I still have time to test. It's 3 times quicker than AVG and will be able to scan the PC during night hours.
I'd recommend you to give a try and see the result.
FYI: I am not their salesman, I just share my own experience.
