I have a windows 2003 sbs with 15 user cal and when I want to add an extra 5 cal I get an error that the maximum addable cals is 15
I know that sbs has a limit of 75 cal, but I had a problem with this server and had to replace some files with backup files in the past.
I know that as long as the small business server setup is not fullfiled there is this limit of 15 cal as I have now
How does the licence detects that the setup is full filed?

Hello Compoint,

LOL, I am indeed happy that I know this info now.
So, onto your question:

SBS has indeed a limit of 75 Cals. That can be device and/or user cals.
So, I think it might be good to check what i wrong on this server to begin with.
You say you haven't fully installed the setup, is this correct?
Do you see any related eventlogs?

So about the licenses:
A Backup of the license file is automatically created at:  C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\autolicstr.cpa.
The working/active license file can be found at:  C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\licstr.cpa.

What you could do is:

1.  Rename licstr.cpa to licstr.cpa.old
2.  Rename autolicstr.cpa to licstr.cpa
3.  Retart the license logging service
4.  Go into the license console and see if your licenses are back
5.  After you verify that the licenses are back, make a backup
6. now try to add the other licenses.
7. if it doesn't work, a call to MS could help.

thank you  for your answer, suppsaws

I tried this, but nothing changed, I can see my installed licenses, but cannot ad another 5 cal as my server thinks it is as brian says: Windows Server for Small Business Server in stead of small business server and that alows only to instal a maximum of 15 cals
My problem is that it is caused of restoring after a problem with a backup.
So I need a trick I think it wil be in the registry, to let the server detect that I fullfilled the small business intallation.
This is the best money I have ever spent. I cannot not tell you how many times these folks have saved my bacon. I learn so much from the contributors.
