I run a few servers on Windows 2008 with the remote access card without any trouble.<br />
<br />
The local firewall on the server doesn't really get a choice about access granted to the RAC. Is it the console you're failing to get access to?<br />

The port requirements are documented here:<br />

But the ports must be open from the connecting client (e.g. your PC) to the RAC controller, it doesn't go through the servers operating system at all.<br />

Thanks for the comment. I am trying to access it via the console through the web on port 80. I have given the RAC controller a different IP than the network card in the server and have put rules in the perimeter firewall the allow the traffic to pass through on port 80 but I still get nothing. Do I have to give the RAC controller an external IP address or is it fine on an internal address with rules allowing the traffic through?<br />

It's fine on an Internal Address, but if you take a flick through the PDF above (to Page 16) you'll see that you need to open up TCP Port 5900 for Video Redirection, and 5901 if you want to use the Keyboard and Mouse. There are a few more for the virtual media services.<br />
<br />
You may also need to open TCP Port 443 to connect to the secure version of the site, mine auto-redirect from HTTP to HTTPS.<br />

Can you see what's connecting or failing to connect on the Firewall? <br />
<br />
Is it actually version 5 of the RAC? You should be able to see the console if you log onto a machine on the same subnet and access the console (something that doesn't go through the Firewall). The version will be on the grey bar at the top if it is version 5.<br />

Yes I am running version 5 of the RAC. I can't see anything in my firewall log that is denying access. I am totally stuck....<br />

I don't get anything just a lovely page cannot be displayed message! I can't see the requests going through as there is that much data going through my firewall it is near on impossible to find it! I have done a telnet using command prompt and the only port that was denied is 443, port 80 is ok and also 5900 and 5901 where fine. If I log into my webserver which is on my external switch and on the same address range as the external address for the RAC then I can log in. I also tried a laptop by plugging it into an external switch and giving it an address on the same range and that let me in as well. <br />

Open up Port 443 as well? It's quite likely it's trying to forward you to the secure page, that happens on mine by default.<br />

No its an INTY firewall, which in about 4 months is going in the bin and being replaced by a Cisco one!

You could potentially run a packet sniffer on the PC and see if it's actually getting the response to the connection on port 443? It's a bit difficult otherwise unless you can set a switch port to promiscuous mode and watch the traffic nearer the RAC.<br />

Is there something in server 2008 that could be blocking access? I have turned off windows firewall and have enabled remote desktop, however I am not sure what else I can do with it.<br />
