How do I create my own Serendipity Template from the Bulletproof one?

I am creating a new blog for my company and our web designer suggested we use Serendipity as it is in the same language as our server (PHP).  I have found the Bulletproof template which supposedly allows me to create my own templates using the Bulletproof code, but I am at a loss on how to do it.  I tried copying the code into a web editor and don't get the same results as my blog page.  Does anyone have any idea how to get the code to a place I can edit it?
