At the bottom line, there is the operating system (normally, linux or windows).<br />

Application server is build over web server.<br />
e-mail server is another server process (service or daemon) over operating system, as well as the database server.<br />
CMS and CRM are applications built over a web server or over a web application.<br />

I am looking for a diagram that shows how a hosting environment is built up from the operating system and DB servers through the application servers to the web site itself and CMS, e-CRM and email/SMS gateways - do you know where i might find an accurate depiction with examples of software that can be used at each level. <br />

I want to validate my understanding of a standard hosting environment - not so worried about where firewalls and load balancing etc sit although if these are in the diagram no problem. <br />
<br />
The key for me is to understand how the stack is built up and to be able to present this to non tecchie people.<br />
