Force media files (QT, WMV) to open in players not embedded in HTML

I'm trying to link to both QT files and WMV files and have the content open up in the correct application, for example a QT movie opens in QT not embedded in the browser or downloaded.

For QT I have created .qtl files and tried adding .qtl to my .htaccess files, no luck.
-> AddType application/x-quicktimeplayer qtl

How do I go about doing this?  Do I need add MIME types to the server? What the procedure for wmv file?
