Force media files (QT, WMV) to open in players not embedded in HTML

I'm trying to link to both QT files and WMV files and have the content open up in the correct application, for example a QT movie opens in QT not embedded in the browser or downloaded.

For QT I have created .qtl files and tried adding .qtl to my .htaccess files, no luck.
-> AddType application/x-quicktimeplayer qtl

How do I go about doing this?  Do I need add MIME types to the server? What the procedure for wmv file?

create a poster movie (showing for example: click here to play), embed it within a web page and within the quicktime embed html tag write something like:
<embed src="poster.mov" width="200" height="240" href="sample.mov" target="quicktimeplayer">

That will open quicktime player upon clicking the poster movie.
