LINUX MCE errors during install: avwizard

hi,
i'm a complete newb with linux. I just want to install it on a new pc i've built so that I can use it as a media center (hence i grabbed the linuxMCE version which is built on kubuntu , from what I can understand). This is my first experience with linux and it really sux. I'm just left staring at a weird looking command prompt and have no idea what to do.

The only other thing I wanted to do is burn files to dvd disk, including ISO files. I'm guessing kubuntu has some applications built in that can do this from the little I read.

Anyways back to the problem, it comes up with an error about Avwizard and video in x. I cannot click OK. So i'm not sure what to do , i've rebooted and tried the various menu optiosn (by pressing escape). When I googled this error, someone said that it was because the video card drivers could not be installed, as I am using a new gigabyte mainboard with an intel chipset. They said to try mythbuntu. So now I am donwloading that.

Is there anyway to fix my existing installation without having to learn Linux command prompt and spend hours tinkering with something I know nothing about?
Am I going about this the right way?

Any input much appreciated.

ASKER

As my old computer (the one i'm typing on now) doesnt have  DVD burner, but my new one does, i'm trying to move files onto an external drive and then burn them as needed from the new system (the linuxmce broken install one) .  i also made a USB boot disk using Xu810p , but my new system seems to not boot from it. The bios has options like usb zip, usb fdd, usb hdd, so I choose usb hdd but all it does is try to boot up to linuxmce and then crash out with the error" failed to setup x" .  so i've got all my OS's on hard drives only, not on disks all i want ideally is to be able to boot into my new pc and then run ISO files to install my OS's. cant find any way to do this via usb flash drive as system wont read it.

and there is no easy way to do it via external HDD either :/

Ok thanks BP. You are correct the LinuxMCE does not like the integrated intel x4550 grpahics card. I went ahead with mythbuntu 8.10 as this is meant to support things. It seemed to run ok. Would you recommend any other type of linux distribution at all?

Concerning the alternatives, Geexbox is the most famous. and widely used: http://geexbox.org/en/index.html. MythUbuntu is Ubuntu remaster which is a good thing if you plan to use something else beside media center features.

Beside that you could try any other distribution with a multimedia center app. For that to work, I guess you should make additional settings.

Some popular media center applications are:
MythTV: http://www.mythtv.org/
Freevo: http://freevo.sourceforge.net/
Elisa: http://elisa.fluendo.com/

Those links are also interesting:
Entertainter: http://www.entertainer-project.com/index.php
XBMC: http://xbmc.org/
Sage TV: http://www.sagetv.com/linuxOEMedition.html (commercial)

My recommendation is to stay with MythUbuntu if it suits you.

Thanx for the points. ;)
Thanks BP, wow you know a lot about media centers.

I've got windows installed aswell now. So i tried XBMC however the gui window size is very awkward on my TV, so I pretty much gave up on that one.

One feature I"d really like is to be able to have all my vidoes automatically updated into a media DB and then be able to view new videos by "last week", or "yesterday" or "last month".... as most of the videos I want to see are new ones I have just got. Its been hard to find one that supports this feature. I did see it on a netgear box but software wise havent found that feature as yet, have you heard of any that do that? Maybe I should open a new question about it.
