how to harden linux centos 5

hi
after I installed linux centos 5 distribution
I found there is problem to download files  like
the java jre and so on it start download then after little
period it halts and stop downloading and I don't know
 why
can you help me in that to have it downlaoding again faster

I'm sorry for my confusion . I download by clicking the file a pop up window display I use
gnom disktop environment

from java site, you trying to download from firefox, by clicking SAVE AS ,

then while downloading its stuck ??

can you not download in any pc, then upload the file to thelinux pc ??

you said, you are trying to download java

have you tryed to download any other file from web ?? does those halt aswell ?? or its just the java ??

while you are downloading, have you check if your internet link is allright or not by doing ping to any outside address

what i am tryign to explain is:

you started your download

then start a ping to any outside address such as

ping www.google.co.uk

see if you internet speed is continuous or there is some breaking i meant, time out ..

do you mean contacting my isp or another thing

sun download manager

after installation I found no difference and it have progress failure from limited number of size and time it increase till it  is unknown and get the status of failure

yes it halt

it start simulate that it's downloading in firefox it continue tell 2% then stop
on sun downloading manager it never start download
