I'm looking for a PHP routine that will upload a file from a remote site onto a server so that  the user on the remote computer will not have to leave my application and  launch a separate ftp-like program. That is, I would like to integrate the uploading routine with my php code.

Ok, for PHP upload (HTML form) you have sample at:
http://www.jfileupload.com/products/tools/index.html
See PHPScript.

Then if you want to HTTP upload multiple files and folders with progress bar then you can use an applet that works with the provided PHP sample:
http://www.jfileupload.com/products/jfileupload/index.html

Could it fit to your need ?
