transparency in Photoshop,3ds max and Directx

Is there a way make a picture or texture partialy transparent, but retaining most of its original color. I am trying to simulate water by using a flat plane with the texture of a sky mage. the water will look like real water as long as ist has the reflection of the sky .I have seen it done before. However I will like the texture to be partialy transparent. Someone gave me an image that is transparent but I don't know how they did it in Photoshop. I have tried to send two images. The one that someone gave me is greenish redish one. The one That I have tried to use is the one with the blue sky and clouds. Please help. Will send imaages again

you can do it in photoshop
open a new file and choos background content transparent
then past your image
the reduce the opacity of the image it will become transparent
but the most important step is to save the image in png extension

When you say reduce the opacity of the image, do you mean in the layers palette? Or is there somewhere else. I will try the layers palette in the mean time

Thanks for your help,

Hi 3725, I recommend you do it all in 3dsMax.  But, just save the Sky Image as a JPG file in Photoshop (normal, without transparency)

1)Make your water material with the settings you like (Are you using the DEFAULT 3dmax rendering engine? or are you ising VRAY?)
2) On the MAPS tab, and under the REFLECTION MAP, assign the Sky JPG file.
3) Under Coordinates, Select ENVIRON, and under MAPPING, play with the options you like most (Spherical, Cylyndrical... etc)
4) Apply the percentage of REFLECTION that you want on the left

Thats it., Hope it helps. Please let us know.

(If you have an example of what exactly you are looking for please ATTACH it in your next post, so we can see, or also attach the images you said you had, because if it is just that you wanted to know how to make it transparent, what DrLIONHEART recommended works. But i think you wanted it a step further, to make it work in 3dmax... or am i wrong?

What dr. lionheart suggested was perfect for what I was doing, but your solution enlightened me to other possibilities in 3ds max. I was looking for the solution in photoshop because in transfering files from 3ds max to Directx some of the feaatures are not accepted nor recognized. Directx does not  many features from 3ds max...features like bump mapping, reflection etc.
Thanks for your help
