How to Write SharePoint KPI based on Data from SQL database?

I was wondering is there any way to define a KPI in sharePoint KPI list based on data from SQL database or any other external data source.

Moss provides the facility to Define KPI using data in SQL Server 2005 Analysis service. But i want to define a KPI by writing a direct query.

Do i need to enhance the default KPI Web part, if yes then any sample code will be appreciated.

no.  you need to use SQL Analysis Services if you are intending to use the out-of-the-box Sharepoint KPI functionality with SQL data.

your other option, which is slightly different than using Sharepoint KPI with Analysis Services, is to use SQL Reporting Services in Sharepoint Integration mode and create a Dashboard:

"When displaying SQL Server data by using Report Center, a user can create a dashboard that pulls information from databases and can also use any other shared content in the Office SharePoint Server world of collaborative content"
