Define Sitemap in Robots.txt or Google Webmaster?

Hi,

Does it matter if my sitemap is defined in Robots.txt and uploaded to Google Webmaster as well?

Thanks

Yes you can specify as many sitemap file as you wish inside the robots.txt
But, AFAIK, you will not see status of the sitemap anywhere. If you submit it to webmaster tools, you will see the last date google downloaded the sitemap, total links on the sitemap, total indexed links on the sitemap and errors and warnings. And why you need the samething on two places. I suggest you not to use sitemap on robots.txt

Thanks for you response. I have a robots file in front of me.

It says on line 3 of my file:

Sitemap: http://www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml

I went on Google Webmaster tools, clicked on Analyze robots.txt and it told me this:

VALUE                                                                                  RESULT
Line 3 : Sitemap: http://www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml             Valid Sitemap reference detected

My question then was, because it said 'Valid Sitemap Reference detected', am I supposed to have this sitemap defined in two places or just one of them.

What you are suggesting is that sitemap should not be defined in robots.txt at all.  Is this correct?
