get JDK 6  from java.sun.com and tomcat 6 from apache.org and install both, set the envirnoment variables export JAVA_HOME ={java installed directory}
export CATALINA_HOME={tom cat installation directory}
export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin;$CATALINA_HOME/bin

start tom cat using ./startup.sh (am not completely sure about the sh file, this was the one for tomcat 5). create your jsp files and keep in CATALINAHOME/webapps/{create your project dir}/test.jsp

access using http://localhost/{create your project dir}/test.jsp
