Dear Sir, i recently purchase HP proliant dl 360 G5 server and Dell Powervalut NF 500 NAS. i dont have any 1 GB switch in the network. all i have is normal 3 Com switch 100 Mpbs.

Main objective of the server is to read data from NAS and perform some quick calculations. i want the data transfer rate to be very high. i mean i dont want my server to communicate with NAS over network. is it possible to connect to HP server direclty to NAS using some fiber cable like peer to peer.

There will be direct communication between NAS and HP server over fiber cable. can i acieve this setup. what do i need to purchase to perform this.

Remember i want the direct communication between NAS and server. two end s of cable connecting to NAS and Hp server.

you can use cross over cable for this. then set IP add on nas and  HP 2nd nic to different range from your main network.  test by ping each other.  you don't need to put gateway on this.

How about the data transfer speed between server and NAS. i want the server and NAS communicating with greater higher data transfer speed. i dont think the cross over cable can provide such a great speed.

cat 6 can transmit at 1Gbps.  both will transmit at the slowest connection. So if both has 1 Gbps NIC, they will talk at 1Gbps.  If one of them is 100Mbps then both will talk at 100Mbps.
