This morning my Reporting services stopped working.  It worked yesterday when I left.  No changes were made to the server.  Below is the output of the SQLDUMPER_ERRORLOG.log.  The initial error was Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow. (rsRPCError).  I could find very little on this except it might be a memory issue.  I decided to reboot the server and the error changed to internal error occurred on the report server.  Any thoughts?

Sounds like a challenge here.  As you haven't gotten any reply by now I'll try to give you some things you could check.

Have a look at the files in your C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\LogFiles\ folder to see if there's any additional info for the issue.

Also check the SQL Server logs (Management Studio) and the Windows eventlog.

Have you got the latest SP installed for SQL2005 (== SP3) ?

As you're suspecting a memory issue, try running a memory test.  Check with your server supplier for the available tool to test this.  This test will take a while but at least it rules out if that's the issue or not.  Otherwise you may hunt bugs that don't exist.

Maybe also check the harddrives for stability.

Event Log is throwing Event ID 107 Report Server (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database.

I'm on service pack 2...I will upgrade it and report back...

The output included in the original post was from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\LogFiles\SQLDmpr1448.log say...

Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.DataProtectionLocal.LocalUnprotectData(Byte[] data)
      Microsoft.ReportingServices.Library.RPCDelegationHandler.CatalogEncrypt(Byte[] decryptedData, Byte[]& encryptedData, String[]& extendedErrors)

ReportingServicesService!library!b!4/2/2009-09:29:54:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.InternalCatalogException: An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details., length <= unencryptedBytes.LongLength - m_lengthHeaderSize;
Info: Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.InternalCatalogException: An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details.

The ReportServerService_(Date).log file says ...

ReportingServicesService!library!9!4/2/2009-09:25:40:: i INFO: Initializing WatsonFlags to '1064'  as specified in Configuration file.
ReportingServicesService!library!9!4/2/2009-09:25:40:: i INFO: Initializing WatsonDumpOnExceptions to 'Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.InternalCatalogException,Microsoft.ReportingServices.Modeling.InternalModelingException'  as specified in Configuration file.
ReportingServicesService!library!9!4/2/2009-09:25:40:: i INFO: Initializing WatsonDumpExcludeIfContainsExceptions to 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException,System.Threading.ThreadAbortException'  as specified in Configuration file.

I'm no longer expecting a memory issue since I found the event id 107.  Now I just think something is F'ed up.

That event ID 107 is indeed the one you should hunt for.

Here's an MSDN page with some info on the error: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337324(SQL.90).aspx

And here's a page with some info on how to troubleshoot a reporting server: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156468.aspx

Also, have a look at the Reporting Services Configuration tool, it should also complain about this problem.

Yeah, I've seen those.  No bueno.  The Reporting Services Config Tool does not complain.  I have all green checks.  Initialization is grey with a check and sharepoint and Encryption are blue with exclamation points.

BTW, this worked till yesterday morning.  Someone ran a report at 8:30 and it stopped working shortly after that.  No changes were made to the box or config.

Hmm, try running a DBCC CHECKDB on the two SSRS databases?  Hopefully that comes up with something?

UPDATE:  Not good news but I changed the Database setup account credentials to SQL Server and created a user.  It accepted the information when I applied it.  I logged into the server with SQL server management studio just fine to make sure the login with the credentials would work.  I restarted the Reporting Services Process and the web server just for shiggles.  No joy.

On to the next suggestion then...

As it cannot get more messed up than it is, try creating a new database in the Database Setup page of the config tool.  Hopefully that works and solves the issue.

BTW: could the reboot have caused a change to the account with which the SSRS Windows service starts?  Through some forced script pushed by another department or whatever? (just want to rule this out)

I really appreciate your suggestions...

I had already tried a new database and new credentials.  I finally called Microsoft last night and got them involved.  After 5 hours of them poking around my server and installing mysterious patches that haven't been released to the general population they got it up and running.  They confirmed that the configuration was correct.  This is not satisfying in that I have no idea what happened or why it stopped working, though, I'm thankful it was fixed.  I'm awarding you the points for effort.  Thanks V

Thanks for the final comment (and points), I appreciate that! :-)

It's unfortunate indeed that we still don't know what caused the issue, a bit scary even.  Anyway, let's hope it doesn't occur too often then!
