I received a laptop in to fix and when I turned it on the screen is almost completely black.  I tried turning up the brightness and nothing happens.  So is the computer ruined or is there something else I can try?

First check are the power led's are glowing or not, if yes then try connecting a external monitor to it. If you dont get the display on that as well then its a problem with the Mobo, and if you get the display its a problem with the LCD Cable or LCD Screen.

The power is good.  The display comes up on a external monitor.  Is the laptop junk now?

You can get the LCD replaced from the HP Service Center and yes if you dont get the parts then surely it will become a junk.
