Problem with HP Designjet 5500PS
After installing an incorrect black ink cartridge into the plotter the front panel displays "insert" for ALL of the ink cartridges. I have Googled the heck out of this, trying all of the procedures, fixes, etc that I could find (to no avail)....
Backing up a bit - my assistant installed a #81 DYE cartridge where a #83 INK cartridge should have been installed. I examined the area where the cartridge was inserted and there are no signs of damage at all.
I also tried to insert the old cartridge and got the same result.
I am hoping that there is a DesignJet GURU out there can can assist.
thanks

Towards the bottom of the last link above, you'll see a chart and table which describes the messages and status codes for ink cartridges, and the recommended actions.

can you point me to the Carriage tube connector?
ALSO - astaec... no message except for INSERT

I scanned the PDF Manual which is more that 13MB, and could not find the schematic to share with you. Did fine, though, that the HP Designjet 5500ps series has/had a Firmware upgrade (after you confirm that you have the latest drivers for your Operating System and model). Some of the fixes for this firmware update include - Improved algorythm to measure the ink level in the ink cartridges, preventing early messages of empty cartridge. Cosmetic changes in the information from the Jetdirect. Fixed links in the WebAccess tool

Printhead tube connector is in place
please note that problem did not occur until AFTER my guy inserted the wrong ink cartridge into the black slot (HP # 81 DYE vs. HP # 83 INK)
83 INK is the correct part

I understood the problem, just not finding "the" solution. Your specific problem is nowhere to be found in terms of reported issues for that model printer/plotter, I sure did try. I've posted the links herewith in case you hadn't tried some of the remedial steps for somewhat related issues. Hopefully others with personal experience on this model will step in here to provide you the perfect solution. Also not sure if yours is the 42 inch or 60 inch product.
Perhaps running Maintenance routines will help you past this roadblock.

Insert error? - There is no consumable installed - Solution from the above: Insert the correct consumable. If the correct consumable is inserted, check that the Carriage tube connector is correctly connected to the carriage.
