Hi Guys,

We are using Symantec Backup Exec 11d to backup our NAS box onto 1TB external hard drives. We currently have it setup to do the following:
1. Friday Afternoon - Do FULL backup of NAS box to 1TB external disk
2. Monday - Thursday Afternoon - Do DIFFERENCIAL backup of NAS box to 1TB external disk (same disk as full backup
3. Friday Afternoon - Swap External Hard Disk, repeat process

The poblem I am having is the full backup image is coming to 330GB, the differencial is coming to 120GB. The program has been told to manage its own space, but for some reason when I came in today the FULL Backup has been removed from the disk and only the differentials remained. Is there a way to make symantec delete the oldest differential if it need space?

Method 1:
You can try creating 2 backup to disk folders in the NAS, Differential and Full.  Assign the folders to the jobs respectively.

Assign a maximum amount of space for Full folder and check allocate the maximum size for backup to disk files so you are sure that there will be enough space for full backup.

Method 2:
Keep the current b2d folder structure and create 2 media sets, differential and full. Set the retention period for full to be 1 week and differential to probably 1 day. For the jobs, assign device to be the b2d folder and media set respectively. This way, the full backups will not be overwritten until it's 1 week while differential can be overwritten as and when needed.
