Hello,

The client wants that I display reminder to the user by reading the database. The table has datetime of reminder and the description of reminder. So when the user starts his computer, this service should start on its own. The user should also have option to disable and enable this service when required. So which service should I write in VB.Net 3.5? The database would be on the SQL Server and the service needs to be installed on every client PC which is Windows XP. Can be windows service with notify icon, etc? Please guide me.

Regards,
MI

Hi,
Since the users should be able to start and stop the service and you need to show a information to the user, I think you should bet on a regular windows forms application, that starts automatically when the computer starts and you just need to have a timer to check the information on the database.
You can also start in the system tray (since will not be visual)

couple of queries on this:
1. How can windows forms application start automatically when the user starts computer?
2. how can I send this windows application to windows tray?
3. Once the application is in system tray, the user should be able to double the application icon in the system tray which will display options to disable this application i.e. in other words, there will be no reminders.

 1) You just need to add an entry to Registry
http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/showtopic21106.htm
2) You can use the NotifyIcon Class
http://www.startvbdotnet.com/controls/notifyicon.aspx
3) In your form add a contextmenustrip and associate that to the form
