When you try to activate windows it gives you an error message saying the program had to be shut down. Also along with this Internet Explorer is doing the same thing as soon as you click the IE icon. It was prompting me to activate windows at log on and no matter which one i chose it just logged off. Now that i have gotten past that i now can not get it to activate windows or get on the internet. Any ideas on what would be causing this and how to fix it?

You should call and try to activate:

The Microsoft Windows Product Activation phone number (for the US anyhow) is 1-888-571-2048

Couple of questions:

1.  Are you using a legit copy of XP?
2.  If so, are you typing in the Activation Key during installation?
3.  During installation are you connected to the internet?

Windows XP will normally perform these functions prior to bringing you the desktop so let's verify that first.

Thanks!

1. yes it is a legit copy of windows
2. it was said to be typed in during installation
3. i have had it connected to the internet.
i do not know exactly how it got to this point, windows was up and running it appears someone almost tried to install windows again on top of a current install. i am just trying to figure out if it is fixable i am trying to avoid a format.
