MS Licensing: Can I migrate SBS 2003 User Cals to replacement SBS 2008 Server?

I am building a replacement server running SBS 2008. This server will replace an old SBS 2003 Server. This is NOT a migration/upgrade. I am rebuilding the domain from scratch.

I have 10 user CALs on the SBS 2003 Server (additional to the 5 CALs pre installed with SBS 2003)

QUESTION: Can I migrate and use the SBS 2003 CALs on the SBS 2008 box or do they loose the liscenses.

The SBS 2003 machine will be burned and rebuilt as a Server 2003 (Standard) file server and BES machine after the transition. I am not sure if MS will let me use the SBS 2003 CALs for that server if I cannot use them for the SBS 2008 build.

Anyone understand MS's convoluted licensing scheme better than I?

Thanks,
-MP

You need to purchase SBS 2008 CALs appropriate to your given circumstances.

The old SBS will require a new server OS license via Open Value Agreement. The SBS 2008 CALs will cover CAL needs for this server.

I have the new lix for the old SBS 2003 conversion to a Server 2003 Standard box. It was only the CALs I was concerned with.

Thanks.
