An error message when session expires? How can I create that?

Is there a way to create a error message or page to let users know their session has expired?

Two suggestions:
  • Store how many milliseconds remain until the session expires, and when the page loads call aa javascript setTimeout that calls a method when the session expires. ie. Show an alert, changing an element on the page, etc.
  • Have an AJAX methods that polls the server to determine whether the session is valid, and show an alert etc....

Not contesting that solution,  however can you elaborate on how increasing the session timeout will inform the user that their session has expired? It will aid future EE users who find this article.
