I added asp.net website using link at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc297200.aspx. But i get error

Description:
Safe mode did not start successfully. It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.  This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\template\layouts\smartlive\web.config line 28)

line 28 is <authentication mode="Windows/>"

If you look at the guide that you were using it says:
To deploy the Web site to the SharePoint layouts folder

Modify the contents of theWeb.config file of ASP.NET Web site and comment out the <authentication> section. For example:

Save the modified Web.config file.
