Trouble Printing

I have a Gateway Laptop with a windows XP operating system, and an HP 952C printer.  The two are connected through a USB Adaptor.  I believe I have updated the driver, however I am still getting an error.  The printer port is set to the virtual printer port for USB.  Any ideas on how to troubleshoot would be appreciated.  I'm getting no where

What do you mean "USB adaptor"?  Is the printer actually using a parallel cable and then running into a USB?

Major tip:

When installing a printer, you really need to follow the manufacturer's instructions.  For whatever reason, printers are very particular and specific in how they are installed.  With that said, DO NOT plug in a printer's USB port until you have ran the install in accordance with how the manufacturer requests.

So, uninstall the printer, then reinstal the printer using the manufacturer's instructions.  It sounds corny, but it does work.

I am using a USB to parallel printer adapter 1284 cable.  So I think you are correct.  I've tried uninstalling reinstalling, updating drivers etc.  The problem is this is an old printer.  So the software that came with the printer is only good through windows 98.  I have paper, refreshed the ink cartridges, and checked for any problem lights on the printer.  I think the printer is fine, it's probably the driver or connection.

Try to get a PCI-> Parallel card.

The printer is so old.  Is it part of some legacy type app?

Are you printing raw text or is it images?

If it's just text, use the generic IBM driver.

I don't think I will be able to use the PCI/Parallel card, because I have a laptop.  The printer is just something I've had for awhile, and haven't needed to use it for awhile until now.  All I really want to use it for is to print word docs, and maybe some .txt.

For $50 I would buy a new printer.  Trying to be economical by seeing if I can get my old printer to work.

my advice :
-many usb to parallel adapter cables do work for printers and scanners
-a pcmcia card works always
-it's not worth it - buy a new printer, and use this one on another pc - if possible

Thanks for trying.  I still haven't gotten the printer to work, so I bought a new one.
