required attendee becomes optional attendee

One of our users put a distribution group in the required field while trying to schedule a meeting.  When I open the Tracking for that meeting it shows the group as "Required Attendee" but it also shows each user of that group listed individually as "Optional Attendee".  What causes this to happen?  User is using Microsoft Outlook 2007.

Well, you can right click the "optional" icon and select required to fix the problem. Assuming you are more interested in getting each individual user to automatically list as required though, correct?

If so, generally sending a request to a DL is not recommended behavior (see here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrclients/thread/37d33ca4-32d3-496d-b0c2-575b48763bb9/). Long story short - Outlook treats a DL as a single user (much the same way it treats a message sent to a DL). Therefore, when individual users reply, they are shown as "optional" instead of required.

The best way to deal with this is to expand the DL (by clicking the plus sign next to it) when sending the invite. Then, each individual user will show as "required," instead of the DL (see this article: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA011276781033.aspx?pid=CL100626971033&CTT=42).
