Do you have requirements from a domain expert, such as a customer in the auto industry. Is it a specific part of the industry? (Sales, repair, parts)

Without more info I can only recommend using a tool like Embarcadero ER/Studio or ERwin. I prefer the former.

Well, it is a visual modelling tool. You create tables visually and draw the relationships, etc. It stores the "model" just like a Visio diagram, but you can use it to generate databases or SQL scripts, or to validate models, or even to reverse engineer an existing database into a visual model.

As for templates, some do have "universal" model templates available, but I don't see one specifically for auto industry.
