At a guess 9 times out ten avi files have divx properties
black screen usually indicates a missing codec
the divx codec is missing I'd say
So for the video enthusiasts always keep a copy of  Gspot to analyse your video when you run into problems incase it's something else, once you load Gspot drop your video on take a look at the messages it shows then at the bottom left click on Proposed Codecs and solutions tests
Video audio and MS A/V it will show the actual problem, I also use gspot for audio flash and other formats.

Install a divx codec either through a divx media player or the actual codec either will give you that codec
media player classic
VLC and BS player all give the divx codecs pluss

Let me know what Gspot reports and if installing the divx player will resolve it.
