Laptop screen went dark blue with a square of colored pattern in middle

Hello Experts,

My friend was using my laptop computer and suddenly called me in because the screen went dark blue with an about 3"x3" square in the middle with a pattern of colors in it.

Moving the mouse and hitting Cntrl+Alt+Del had no effect, so I shut down manually, unplugged all UBS devices, removed the battery, counted to 10, put the battery back in, plugged in the power, crossed my fingers and rebooted.

On starting up, there was a window stating that Windows had recovered from a serious error with the following Error signature:
BCCode : 1000007e     BCP1 : C0000005     BCP2 : 806EF134     BCP3 : F78EDC28
BCP4 : F78ED924     OSVer : 5_1_2600     SP : 3_0     Product : 768_1

Error report Contents
C:\DOCUME~1\LYNNMA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER3309.dir00\Mini040609-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\LYNNMA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER3309.dir00\sysdata.xml

I went to open the error report contents, but there was no WER3309 file in my Temp folder as specified by the file path.

Please inform me the cause of this problem so I can fix it. If you need additional info, I'll do my best to answer.

Thank you in advance for your attention!

pchinelle

here what it says :
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck.  Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem.
it can be anything; so try booting into safe mode - if that works, you can suspect a driver problem, and try updating the drivers
you can also run ram and disk tests, to be sure about the basics :
ram : www.memtest.org
disk : http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Hello,

Thank you for your very complete reply.
About booting in safe mode:
After the problem, I rebooted in regular mode and the problem has not reappeared. Since the problem is not currently present, I don't see what difference I will find by re-booting in safe mode.
If the problem is with a driver, would it show up in the device manager?

Thanks,
pchinelle

p.s. For the RAM test, I downloaded the Memtest86+ and I'd rather wait and do that once I'm sure it's not a driver problem. For the Disk test, on the site you sent me to, it stated that Toshiba doesn't currently have a diagnostic tool.

no it would probably not show in DM, but it's always good to check for errors.
you can also update your chipset, and video driver
for disk test, try the hitachi's drive fitness test then

>>  I downloaded the Memtest86+ and I'd rather wait and do that   <<   WHY?  it's harmless, just a bootable floppy or cd to run and test
