The operation did not successfully complete.

The backup is to a USB drive over a network.

What are my options.  I've read about having startup files interfere, so here' s a screen of msconfig

VSS service is set to Local Account.

This is a Windows Server 2003 SP2 with most if not latest windows updates.

Backup usually goes for about 10-15 minutes before its halted.

Is this fixable?

most of the time such errors are seen due to issues with VSS. Do you have all the latest VSS updates installed?

check for any specific VSS errors in the event viewer logs.
